چکیده

Abstract In the framework of our extensive modeling study spectral evolution white dwarfs, we present here a new set detailed calculations transport residual hydrogen in helium-rich dwarfs. First, investigate so-called float-up process at high effective temperatures, whereby upward diffusion trace leads to formation atmosphere. We examine dependence this phenomenon on initial abundance and strength radiative wind that opposes gravitational settling. Combined with empirical knowledge evolution, simulations provide quantitative constraints content hot helium-dominated dwarf population. Then, outcome convective dilution low superficial layer is mixed within underlying envelope. stark contrast previous works dilution, demonstrate that, under reasonable assumptions, models successfully reproduce observed atmospheric composition cool DBA stars, thereby solving one most important problems theory evolution. This major improvement due self-consistent earlier process, which predicts existence massive reservoir underneath thin layer. argue detected surface dwarfs is, cases, primordial origin rather than result external accretion.

Diffusion and the occurrence of hydrogen shell flashes in helium white dwarf stars

In this paper we investigate the effects of element diffusion on the structure and evolution of low-mass helium white dwarfs. Attention is focused mainly on the occurrence of hydrogen shell flashes induced by diffusion processes during cooling phases. Physically sound initial models with stellar masses of 0.406, 0.360, 0.327, 0.292, 0.242, 0.196, 0.169 and 0.161 M⊙ are constructed by applying m...

The evolution of helium white dwarfs I .

We present a grid of evolutionary tracks for low-mass white dwarfs with helium cores in the mass range from 0.179 to 0.414 M . The lower mass limit is well-suited for comparison with white dwarf companions of millisecond pulsars. The tracks are based on a 1 M model sequence extending from the pre-main sequence stage up to the tip of the red-giant branch. Applying large mass loss rates at approp...

Spectropolarimetric Survey of Hydrogen-rich White Dwarf Stars

We have conducted a survey of 61 southern white dwarfs searching for magnetic fields using Zeeman spectropolarimetry. Our objective is to obtain a magnetic field distribution for these objects and, in particular, to find white dwarfs with weak fields. We found one possible candidate (WD 0310−688) that may have a weak magnetic field of −6.1±2.2 kG. Next, we determine the fraction and distributio...

THE ROLE OF HeH IN COOL HELIUM-RICH WHITE DWARFS

HeH is found to be the dominant positive ion over a wide range of temperatures and densities relevant to helium-rich white dwarfs. The inclusion of HeH in ionization equilibrium computations increases the abundance of free electrons by a significant factor. For temperatures below 8000 K, He free-free absorption is increased by up to a factor of 5 by the inclusion of HeH . Illustrative model atm...

Diffusion of neon in white dwarf stars.

Sedimentation of the neutron rich isotope 22Ne may be an important source of gravitational energy during the cooling of white dwarf stars. This depends on the diffusion constant for 22Ne in strongly coupled plasma mixtures. We calculate self-diffusion constants D(i) from molecular dynamics simulations of carbon, oxygen, and neon mixtures. We find that D(i) in a mixture does not differ greatly f...
